Hamas vows vengeance after leaders death

Tripoli: Islamic State militants seized the al-Maghriba district, south of Tripoli. A spokesman for the Islamic State said Friday's capture was a major military victory for the terror group.

The U.N. Security Council on Friday condemned the militants' attack, calling it a "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law."

"It's not just a military victory for ISIS, it is also a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, where humanitarian people are in danger," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters.

On Thursday, ISIS claimed it launched a suicide attack in the central Maghriba district where most of its fighters were held.

The attack came after the Islamic State announced that its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, had died in an explosion near the main road leading to al-Tunisia.

U.N. and international forces have carried out a number of airstrikes against ISIS since then, including airstrikes against a convoy of its fighters near Damascus, Syria, in February and near Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, Iraq, in July.

Since the attack on the French satirical magazine, the Islamic State had carried out a number of other attacks in Tripoli.

The group last captured the city of Sirte from a U.N.-backed government on March 3, but was then driven out of Sirte by Syrian forces.

Hamas accuses egypt of torturing its members

Egypt's army said Thursday it had arrested about 500 Palestinians suspected of spying for Israel and attempting to travel to Israel to join Hamas or the Islamic Jihad movement.

"We arrested some persons from the Palestinian organizations from the Al-Shifa medical center, Al-Aqsa mosque, al-Quds mosque, Al-Sheikh Mohammad Mosque and nearby towns and from the Gaza Strip," army spokesman Captain Abdel-Fattah al-Tunisi said.

The statement said some 50 Hamas members were arrested.

The announcement was the latest in a string of arrests against Palestinians.

"It's not clear when the arrests began, though it's clear that several months have passed since the last operation to disrupt them, so that indicates to us that this is an ongoing operation," said Alon Ben-Zvi, head of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights.

Al-Nahal group

Meanwhile, al-Nahal, a militant group in Gaza that Hamas blames for stoking the violence, on Thursday urged more violence against Israel and the Jewish state.

Israel struck a tunnel that was dug between Israel and Gaza during a military operation in late July, killing three Gazans and wounding dozens more. The tunnel was used in rocket attacks from the enclave's territory.

The al-Nahal, formed by two Hamas leaders in Egypt, issued an order to members on Thursday demanding that they carry out attacks against Jews. It said members also could bomb synagogues and Jewish institutions.
